This is Dr. Geroge Handleman, mathematician and former Dean of Science. Besides the pipe, he was also freqently seen on campus with a small dog on a leash and, on those occasions, discretly avoided the library…
Mystery solved! Irv, thanks for the ID and the story. It turns out we have many more photos of Dr. Handleman with various bow ties and pipes, but unfortunately none with the dog.
Sadly, Dr. Handleman passed away September 13, 2008. He will be remembered fondly by those who knew him and for those who didn’t, documentation of his career at RPI will be preserved in the Archives for many years to come.
